Chapter Seven

Rowan

I have to go home eventually. I can't just spend the rest of my life curled up in Carter's arms, in the attic where we spent so much time as teenagers, wearing his comfy sweatpants that smell like him.

Although, the more I think about it, the more I want to do just that.

He's always had an outdoorsy smell to me. Not the pungent straw-and-goats odor of the barn, but the warm, happy aroma of sun-kissed skin on a hot summer day. It reminds me of going swimming in the big, freshwater lake a few miles outside of town, of Carter teasing me until I built up the courage to cannonball from the rocks into the sparkling water below.

And it's extremely difficult to peel myself away from that, but by dinnertime my hair is feeling decidedly crunchy and my parents must be concerned. I went from full-time couch potato attempting to eat my weight in ice cream to staying overnight at Carter's place in a flash, and even my head is spinning.

"You should stay a little longer," Carter says as I pull on my coat.

He's run all my clothes through the wash so now they smell like him, too, and I wish I could stay. "My mom'll be worried about me," I say, which is only half the truth and he knows it. We both saw that mortifying eggplant emoji.

"Text her," Carter suggests, wrapping his arms around me and making it damn near impossible to leave. "Tell her I'm keeping you safe."

"I need a change of clothes," I say. "And my own shampoo. No offense, but your two-in-one stuff is for the birds."

Carter ruffles his fingers through his own short hair and says, "Suits me just fine."

"Yeah, it does," I agree, running one hand through his soft locks. His hair is standing up in all directions because we've spent most of the last 24 hours in bed, and mine's not looking much better.

I have to take a big step backward, out of Carter's grasp, or I'll never leave.

"I'll talk to you soon, okay?" I promise as I head for the door. He frowns a little, like a puppy who doesn't understand why his owner has to leave him behind, and my chest constricts.

I really do have to get out of here.
